It's the final countdown! week of May 18, 2020
These are our final days of digital learning. No new assignments. If you haven't turned in the work, you have until 10 PM Tuesday, May 19, 2020. I have to post grades and cannot and will not accept any work after that. Don't forget to let me know when you have turned something in.
I must say, you guys were my first middle school teaching experience. I really did enjoy my time with you all. It is hard to not see you and physically say "Good-bye and good luck" to you personally and face-to-face. We've had our ups and downs, but I think we had more up and more fun than any down times. I think you all have great personalities and that your future is super bright. Focus. Do your best in everything that they do. If you apply yourself, you will do well in high school and in life. Also, remember that people often fail the first, second, third times at more at some of their goal. You are successful when you get up and try, try, try again. Always try. Always. Enjoy your summer the best that you can. Stay safe. Wash your hands. And know that I'm there for you if you need it.

Week of May 4-8
Welcome to a new week of digital learning. I hope you are all safe and happy. Stay positive. I did pack up my room on Monday. Very weird and sad to not see everyone's face to say good-bye. Physical school may be over, but digital learning continues. This week we will continue with CommonLit. I selected some poems to read and answer questions. Please use the site to put all of your answers in. Remember to use the R.A.C.E.S. method to answer the short responses.
"In Julio Noboa's poem 'Identity,' a speaker explains why they would choose to be a weed over a flower. Pairing 'The Rose That Grew from Concrete
with 'Identity' think how the two poems use nature to explore identity. What does being a flower mean to the speakers of the two poem? What do the two speakers consider important? How do they explore this through the imagery of flowers and weed?"
Assignment:
"The Rose that Grew from Concrete" and "Identity." Please reach out if you have any questions.

Monday, May 4, 2020 - may the fourth be with you!
May the fourth be with you. Star Wars fans get me (May the FORCE be with you. Get it???)
Today I will be closing up my physical classroom. What a way to end a school year (insert sad face). Digital learning will continue until the school year officially ends. I will post the assignment either later today or tomorrow morning. I will send a Remind alert when I do post it. I hope you all are staying busy and staying safe.

Week of April 27 - May 1
Digital learning week #6
Hello, beautiful people. I hope you are all staying safe and working on getting your assignments completed. Speaking of assignments, I have noticed a decline in work being turned in. My goal and my focus is to encourage everyone to stay focused on school even if it is in a virtual realm. We did not prepare to be physically out of the school building for such a long time, but since we are, it requires discipline to check in daily with all of your classes and to do the assigned work from the teachers. I care about your education, and I hope you do to. Continue to do the work. Now is the perfect time to form good habits.

Hello, beautiful people. I hope you are all well, staying safe, and washing your hands. Below you will find updates and your assignments for the week.
- With Friday being a catch up day, ELA will now meet on THURSDAYS. I will send a link out Thursday morning (4/23) for the Zoom meeting that afternoon. I am also combining classes to make it easier on all of us.

- See you then.
- 1st and 2nd will meet at 1 PM
- This week you will complete five choice board activities based on a non-fiction article you will read. I am "assigning"
you the articles so that you can find them easily. Do not complete the CommonLit activities. You will be completing the choice board activities instead. Read one (1) of the following articles on Commonlit ("Watch Out: Cell Phones Can Be Addictive" OR "TEENAGERS WHO DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP AT HIGHER RISK FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS") and complete any 5 activities from the choice board. - Turn in your choice board responses to the MICROSOFT / Office 365 Notebook. There will be a section in Homework to put your responses in. I prefer not to have emails or pictures of your responses. Use the online Notebook to turn work in. If you have trouble accessing it, first, look at my post below for March 23. I gave you the steps to access the Notebook online. Second, contact me to see if I can help. I might not be able to (especially from home), but I will try to guide you through if I can. Third, if nothing works to get you into Notebook, then email me your responses or send a picture through Remind.
- Continue with Membean. You need to keep up with the activity.
Week of April 13-17, 2020
Welcome back! I hope you had a safe, enjoyable, relaxing break, and remembered to wash your hands! We are back to digital learning. A few things:
- I know that many of you have questions about what the county sent out in regards to your grades. Currently, I do not have answers. I will direct you or your parent/guardian to contact the grade level administrator, Mr. Eric Gray, [email protected].
- Cobb County has switched to a 4-day school week. You will do your work, meet with teachers, and such Monday - Thursday. Friday will be a make up day. I hope that this relieves some stress on you.
- Zoom meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. In the morning, I will send a link through Remind. The meeting will not be long. It is a check in for any homework related questions.
- Continue with Membean. Remember that the time has increased to 25 minutes each time for 3 days this week. Please notice that the time is increased so that you complete the full amount. I don't see many people accessing this assignment. Students need to keep up with their work. You need to log into Membean with the class code that I sent through Remind and begin the process. Keep up with your assignments.

week of march 30 - April 3, 2020
Hello, my dears! We are starting week #3 of digital learning. As you know, the governor has extended school closures for several more weeks. I do hope that you are all staying safe and keeping busy at home. What are some activities that you do to keep busy? Are you reading a good book that you would like to share? Have you started a journal? Have you started a new hobby? Years ago I learned how to knit by watching a video. Are you mastering an online game? I would love to hear about it. Whatever you are up to, be sure to be safe, monitor your screen time, and get enough sleep.
This week we will continue with the format that we have been following since last week. I am concerned with the low level of participation. We may not be in a physical school setting, but if you have access to a computer and internet, you really should do the work so that you don't fall behind and have a mountain of work to complete once we do return to a physical building. Remember that learning never stops no matter the age or time. I'm always learning new things. Assignments below:

Remember that learning never stops no matter the age or time. I'm always learning new things. Assignments below:
- Continue with CommonLit. You should have the login information by now, but if not, let me know. There are two articles for you to read and respond to - "Five reasons why being kind makes you feel good — according to science" and "Can we cultivate our own happiness?" Your responses should follow the RACES method. If you only answer in 2-3 sentences, then you probably aren't following the directions.
- Continue with Membean. I have increased the time to 25 minutes each time for 3 days this week. Please notice that the time is increased so that you complete the full amount. I don't see many people accessing this assignment. Students need to keep up with their work. You need to log into Membean with the class code that I sent through Remind and begin the process. Keep up with your assignments.
- In your ELA Notebook (accessed through Office365, find the steps below), you have a new Quick Write Week #2 to respond to. I have not seen many people respond to the first prompt. Is there an issue logging in? I know that it can be done, but if you need help, let me know. Or did you forget? Be sure to get it done. You can still access week 1 and submit it. If you have issues accessing Notebook, write / type your response and email it to me. I prefer for responses to be submitted through Notebook.
- Quick Write #2 - Requirements: Respond to the prompt below. Answer all of the parts. Use complete sentences. Write six or more sentences. With all that is going on in the world, there are many acts of kindness going around all over the place. People are helping strangers, the elderly, doctors and nurses, and more. At the same time, many people are missing out on important life events including birthday parties, the birth of children, weddings, graduations, trips, and more. What is something that you were looking forward to but can't do right now? How does this make you feel? Will you be able to do it later?
Zoom! I will assign times to meet each class period on Tuesday (3/31). I will send a Remind notice later on Monday for you to have the Zoom link. This is just a quick check in to see if you have any questions about your assignments and to see how you all are. Please attend if you can. If you need to speak to me further, we can arrange a separate meeting, or communicate through email or Remind.
Stay safe!
Stay safe!
Week of March 23-27, 2020
Hey, beautiful people. I hope you are all staying home, healthy, and busy with reading, cleaning, cooking, video games, or whatever you do to entertain yourselves during this time. This week I will be implementing a few new things and continuing with Common Lit and perfecting the RACES method. I will be working on checking your responses from last week and giving you feedback. Remember that a your responses should follow the RACES method. If you only answered in 2-3 sentences, then you probably aren't following the directions. Let's get started with this weeks happenings.
- I've set up individual notebooks in OneNote. You need to login to Office 365 in order to access it. Follow the steps BELOW if you need help accessing OneNote. Please let me know if there are any issues.
- Under Class Notes you will find Need to Know. This will give you a brief summary of what we did the previous week, and what is happening this week.
- You will complete 3 Quick Writes in the Quick Write section. There are 5 options to choose from, but you only need to respond to 3 of them.
- If you haven't done so already, sign up to Membean using the code that I sent through Remind for your specific class. Membean will quiz you about the words you know. You are responsible to do this 3 times a week for at least 15 minutes each time.
- Homework is to continue to fine-tune your short response skills using RACES. There are 2 informative articles on CommonLit for you to read and answer. Go to your specific class period for the articles and writing your responses.
- Miss the library? Check out the picture below for library going-ons for Monday 3/23.
- Need help logging into Office 365? Follow these steps. http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/InstructionalTechnology/CR/Office365/Office365HowStudentsSignin.pdf

We have had a lot going on so let me list them.
- Most important is that there will be a Verb Mood quiz on the week of 11/11. Students took guided notes in class. This week most of the classes did a review sheet (except 7th and 1st, which will do it next week). The Verb Mood PPT is below. Students can use it to review the 5 types that they will need to be able to identify. The answers to the verb mood practice are at the bottom of this entry for those who want to check their answers.
- IIf your child did not do well on The Giver chapter 1-3 and 4-6 quizzes, there will be an opportunity to redo the quizzes the week of 11/11. The highest grade your student can receive will be a 70. They will have to come and see me to make arrangements about redoing the quiz. If your student missed the quiz due to absence, they can make arrangements to makeup the quizzes. If you are unable to buy the book over the weekend, students can listen to the audio on YouTube, buy a digital copy on Amazon, and so on.

- Why wasn’t Gabriel at the naming ceremony?
- What was the Ceremony of Loss?

Utopia (not Zootopia) 10/17-21
****Parents/Guardian/Students - 1) We will start reading The Giver by Lois Lowery next we. We have class copies, but students can always purchase their own copies for personal use. It's not required, but you may find it beneficial to your student. 2) we will start a group project next week. Students have not been assigned it yet, but each group needs ONE (1) square tissue box. I wanted to give everyone a heads up to prepare to purchase one.****
10/17 - Students were introduced to the concept of "Utopia." Students started by looking at a picture and writing a response in their journals (look at PPT below). Student filled in guided notes with information from the PowerPoint (see below), read a short excerpt from Utopia by Sir Thomas Moore. As a class, we read and analyzed the songs "Imagine," by John Lennon, and "Where Is the Love?" by the Black Eyed Peas. Student wrote a response to each of these songs in their journals. Please make sure that your journals are complete because there will be a journal check soon. You can find the songs to listen to and the lyrics to read online.
